This t-shirt is one of the projects I think of when I catalog my own personal craft fails. I was inspired by Cal Patch’s amazing idea to add crochet trim to a t-shirt collar to customize it. I am a beginner-plus crocheter. I’ve crocheted quite a few hours, followed just a few patterns, and haven’t really made anything that attractive to show for my crocheting time. I really loved Cal’s idea, though, and I made a special trip to the store to get a t-shirt in a color my mom loves so I could try this project out for her Christmas gift (I try to give handmade!)
I don’t know what’s going on with that collar (obviously I didn’t do the same stitches as in Cal’s sample project)! There’s this weird ruffly thing going on. It kind of reminds me of Olive Oyl’s awkward blouse. And I didn’t trim the collar large area enough (I was paranoid the scoop would go way too low), so it still looks like a regular crewneck tee with a weird crochet outcropping on it.
Too much crochet would have been much better. You just can’t tell what’s going on with this at all.
Oh, but the best part: I decided to give it to my mom anyway because I wasn’t sure if it was totally awful or not. She opened it on Christmas morning, and my normally VERY supportive and encouraging mother actually LAUGHED in my face. Her gut reaction.
This is the story I told some of my compatriots when we were talking about starting a blog about craft fails.
