Crocheted T-shirt Collar Fail

By Heather, Dollar Store Crafts

This t-shirt is one of the projects I think of when I catalog my own personal craft fails. I was inspired by Cal Patch’s amazing idea to add crochet trim to a t-shirt collar to customize it. I am a beginner-plus crocheter. I’ve crocheted quite a few hours, followed just a few patterns, and haven’t really made anything that attractive to show for my crocheting time. I really loved Cal’s idea, though, and I made a special trip to the store to get a t-shirt in a color my mom loves so I could try this project out for her Christmas gift (I try to give handmade!)

I don’t know what’s going on with that collar (obviously I didn’t do the same stitches as in Cal’s sample project)! There’s this weird ruffly thing going on. It kind of reminds me of Olive Oyl’s awkward blouse. And I didn’t trim the collar large area enough (I was paranoid the scoop would go way too low), so it still looks like a regular crewneck tee with a weird crochet outcropping on it.

Too much crochet would have been much better. You just can’t tell what’s going on with this at all.

Oh, but the best part: I decided to give it to my mom anyway because I wasn’t sure if it was totally awful or not. She opened it on Christmas morning, and my normally VERY supportive and encouraging mother actually LAUGHED in my face. Her gut reaction.

This is the story I told some of my compatriots when we were talking about starting a blog about craft fails.

Oh Heather, I’m so glad you made this site–I only have mental pictures of my craft fails but I’ll be sure to catalog them from now on so everyone else can have a chuckle and maybe a little shudder!

I like it! I’d wear it.

You’re much braver than I am – I’ve always wanted to try this, but I’ve been too afraid because I figured it would end up being an epic fail :D

I think the problem might be as simple as gauge…Cal Patch’s closeups make it look like she’s using a very small gauge crochet hook and perhaps even crochet thread instead of yarn. I think it’s worth another try! I say break out some old t-shirts and play around :)

Thanks for this site. I love it and have been debating as to wheather do one like this for many months, now it seems I will. Your piece is great. I am unemployed so this is my story of bummer gifts:
I made a set of pot holders square with the rose in the middle and decided to add a pearl in the middle of the rose to me it looked fabulous so I gave it as a Christmas gift to my sis in law with a pearl necklace put it in a tiny bag and 1. she twisted the necklace that it almost broke off and did the same to the pot holders as if it were rags. I was so embarrased I want the earth to open and hide in it. So, now I do not give her or anyone a gift. My mom usually give anything I give her to someone else so that is that I just give her 20.00 and see ya’.
