This project came about because I wanted cheerful curtains on the cheap for my newly painted kitchen. I sewed the curtains from a flat sheet purchased for $2 at Wal-mart. That part went surprisingly well for a sewing project.
The next step involved adding large apples and dots, you know, the cheerful part. I thought this went pretty well. After an hour of stenciling and letting the curtains dry over night, it was time to put them up!
My sweet husband followed my instructions hanging these whilst I unloaded the dishwasher. When he was finished I turned around to see the sun shining through the most amateur stenciling I’ve ever witnessed! You could see every swirl, pat, dab, and stroke I made with the paint. It was horrible. To see just how terrible click on the photo. The curtains were then snatched down and donated to the local Goodwill. Someone with a dark kitchen might like them.
They look so sweet from a distance!
I can’t imagine anyone could paint evenly enough so it would look like a print when light is shining behind it. I don’t think it’s possible. The curtains by themselves are well done- good job on that part!
Oh no, that’s absolutely adorable. At least to me. I bet they would fit right into a kids room.

I don’t think these are bad at all; the variation in the apples looks like the different reds in a real apple.
I think it’s cute, too! Any time I stencil and someone other than me can recognize the intended shape, I consider it a success!
You could have touched them up by hand…ahh well, next time right?! ;)
You did a good sewing job! Maybe if you had washed them they would have looked okay. Oh well, better luck next time!
I actually they they are quite nice with that handmade quality. They might not have turned out they way you envisioned, but I wouldn’t say Fail. I think Maya’s comment about a kids room is very nice suggestion. Stencil a few matching accessories and yay matching room without the big box store feel.

They really look cute and perky from a distance. I like the playful colors. I wonder if stitching patterns in matching colors over the stencils would have hidden the brush strokes? It’s a good pattern you used to brighten up any kitchen.
Aww, I think they turned out so cute. You could have used the fabric to make a tote bag or something! Quick, everyone run to csburroughs’ local Goodwill!
Ahh, you guys are too kind to those curtains! Really did you click on the photo? My husband asked if my 6 year old painted them.
these were cute…I agree with Heather….you should have done something else with them….even lining them would have fixed the problem…or you could have made teacher tote bags!
I’m going to reiterate that they look fine in the little photo, so they must look okay from a distance. Would a second layer of paint helped?

I thought they were cute, even if it did look like my kindergartner painted them.
Maybe a second coat of paint would’ve helped? *shrug* I know NAFFING about stenciling and less about paint in general. We had to have a friend of DH’s help us figure out what paint colors go together because we’re going to be repainting our living room and kitchen soon.
I thought these were cute, too. Maybe a lining would have been good so the sun wouldn’t shine through so starkly if that had been bothering you.
But, I shouldn’t talk.
I stenciled my bathroom once, a border up near the ceiling. Was tedious. I think it lasted maybe a week before my husband painted it over. Was horrible and primitive looking.
I don’t think those are a fail at all – I think they’re adorable. I love handmade items where you can see the “human” touch. If I want something perfect, that’s available at any box store, know what I mean? :) I think you have a lot of talent and some thrift store shopper is going to SCORE!

Great job on sewing, you could have put a liner in to make the sun not shine through… but I love the fact that the apple on the far right side kind of looks like a pumpkin. ;o) At least you had a sweet hubby to help you hang curtians!

So close to fabulous…
Mind, the pattern in the top apple second from right looks a bit like Woody Allen to me…
I think these are cute!! So much better than I could do, I assure you. Wait, that isn’t saying much.
Really not a bad job! Can I ask how you hung them? I am working on a similar project (for my kitchen, no stenciling involved though!) and was wondering the best way to get them up. I was thinking snap tape? Here’s what I’m looking at: http://www.curtain-tracks.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=snap+tape Let me know if anyone has experience with this! THANKS!
