Angels Shouldn’t Melt

This is what happens when one decides they know what the baking instructions are for polymer clay… Without actually reading. I put them in the toaster oven and I thought it was supposed to be baked at 375 for 10 minutes – ever smell overcooked plastic?

Each piece puffed up like a burnt marshmallow – they really weren’t this lumpy when they entered the oven. Do they look happily vintage to you?

  1. Umm…they are definitely unique! :)

Are you going to try again with them? I am curious to see how they are supposed to look.

Aww, happened to me the first time I used polymer clay as well, when working on a claymation project. I kind of took the fahrenheit temperature to be celsius, and actually left it in there for half an hour! I did that twice before I realised what was wrong, hehe…

  3. Well they do kinda of look vintage… but that’s still sucks that they burnt. If you were using Premo Sculpey as your clay, a better baking temp and time would be 265F-275F for 1 hour. Your temp was too high as you can see, but the baking time was also too short.

Even if you had the right temp, only ten minutes on a piece like that would have firmed up the outside but left the inside uncured. The uncured clay would then eventually eat away at the cured clay and the piece would have fallen apart over time. Hopefully it goes better for you next time!

ew……nope, they look more like those walking trees from Lord of the Rings! (Ents) Thanks for the giggle though :-)

Well, if you never need to make a diarama of the Salem Witch Trials, you know what to do.

I actually think they look cool, go give them to a goth kid they would love them!

  7. I think they look kinda cool, but I ditto what Cindy said… the temperature should be 275 not 375. plus you need to let them bake for at least 30 minutes, 10 is noway adequate.

I thought they were adorable and was looking for how to make them. LOL. A few dots for eye and a cherub smile and they are done!
