You’d think by now I’d realize that if I don’t like the way fabrics look together before quilting them, I’m not magically going to like them together after quilting.
I had purchased 5 different fat quarters of flannel and was determined to make them into a mini-quilt. I had doubts about these two fabrics together when I laid them out, but my carefully hand-mapped and colored pattern required two quilt squares using these fabrics together. I didn’t want to let down my pattern, which I loved so much, even when the reality was staring me in the face (and hypnotizing me to its will).
So far, friends have compared this eye-wrenching quilt square to cultured bacteria, a magic eye picture, or something requiring 3D glasses to even look at. I think it looks like the latest in Hypno-toad inspired couture.
I LOVE the cultured bacteria comment! :)
One block may look like cultured bacteria, but keep making these blocks! Entire quilts made of all polka-dot fabric are SO cute. When many blocks are set together, the dots recede and you see swirling color instead–the dots are less important. I am currently building my personal stash so I can make an all-dot quilt, too. For an example, see Mary Mashuta’s quilts at http://www.marymashuta.com/Pages/Bio-Quilts.html. She does the same thing with stripes.
