Once upon a time there was a lady who made starfish ornaments. She would lovingly paint starfish into whimsical characters like Santa Claus. One morning she had an idea to create a gingerbread man.
“He shall the be best gingerbread man the world has ever seen!” said she. And then she set about creating the gingerbread man out of a starfish she found on the beach.
She chose the perfect shade of gingerbread brown, added white frosting details, and gave him three red buttons down the front of his coat.
As she painted his little gingerbread eyes, he looked up at her. Then he jumped up and shouted “Run run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread starfish man!”
You can imagine how shocked the woman was. None of her crafts had ever hopped off the table and talked to her.
As she was still pondering this bizarre turn of events, the gingerbread starfish man jumped off the table and ran out the door of her studio. He ran through her kitchen and across the path of a lazy cat, who pounced after the gingerbread man. The cat was too slow, and the little starfish shouted “Run run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread starfish man!”
And then he ran through the cat door in the kitchen patio door, and ran out onto the patio, and out through the backyard.
I happened to be walking in the neighborhood, and I saw a weird little brown Gumby-like starfish thing run past. Being no stranger to craftfails, I knew what I was looking at immediately.
“Run run run just as fast as you can…” he began. I scooped the little man up into my crocheted-with-pink-fun-fur purse and closed it tight. “You can’t catch me?” he finished, obviously confused.
“Oh but I did catch you, little man!” I said.
And I brought him home and stuck him on the scanner for his craftfail mugshot.
I make sea shell Christmas ornaments. As you can see from my blog, I’ve succeeded in making many different types of starfish Santa ornaments. My next great attempt was a starfish gingerbread man ornament. FAIL! My dad says that he looks like a chocolate something or other. My friend Heather says that he looks like a brown Gumby. I’m not sure what he looks like, he certainly doesn’t look like a gingerbread man.
