My intent was to bake beautiful sugar cookie shapes (with my 7 year old daughter) that we could decorate. We didn’t even make it to the decorating stage! The cookies sort of…took on their own identities in the baking process. Straight up cookie shape rebellion.

I think I see a star in there! :D
You just let the dough get too warm before baking. The butter also should be cold, not melted, or everything spreads. Try again with softened, cool butter & dough, it will work!
You have to find a really good recipe. Use good butter and not the cheap stuff because cheap butter has more water in it. The recipe should not have any baking powder or soda, you don’t wan the dough to rise – rising = spreading. And, yes, like Ali said, the dough has to be cold. After mixing refrigerate for at least an hour, roll out and shape dough and put on baking sheet, then put back in frig for awhile.
