Gluten-Free Glop

Maybe you’ve heard of this “gluten” stuff that seems to be in just about everything that’s edible. Based on my exhaustive scientific research (four minutes spent on, gluten appears to be nature’s leading cause of deliciousness. Unfortunately, some people are sensitive to it, which has lead to the frantic rewriting of recipes for many of our favorite foods. Now we can all safely enjoy things like this gluten-free pie crust by without the fear of exposure to this marvelous yet occasionally toxic ingredient.

That was the goal of reader Nineeve, who just wanted to enjoy her pecan pie in a gluten-free environment. Is that too much to ask? Apparently, yes.

    Surely the white glop next to the pecan pie is melted ice cream, or melted whipped cream? The pie crust looks thin and crumbly, but intact.

    I’m pretty sure you’re right about the ice/whipped cream – I hope. I don’t even require food I eat to be intact, so this looks pretty fantastic by my standards. If I tried to make a pie crust from scratch, it’d probably end up as a liquid.

    I wasn’t making a gluten free crust but I did most definitely have a major crust fail. I was making a cheesecake to donate to a cake fundraiser and I wanted to be fancy so I was going to make my own graham cracker crust. I was sick the day I was making the cheesecake and my nose was very stuffed up, so I go to the pantry pull out the crumbs and other ingredients and make the crust and then make the filling and bake it. My sister came over the next morning to transport the cheesecake to fundraiser and she told me that the house smelled funny. I didn’t think much of it and she went to get the cheesecake and she told me the cheesecake smelled terrible. I looked at the box of graham cracker crumbs I used and it had expired over a year before but I couldn’t smell that they were rancid. I am just so glad that I didn’t take it the fundraiser and have someone get seriously ill from eating it.

  5. Gluten Free stuff takes some practice if it’s your first time. I’m twelve and I make gluten free desserts that once in a while don’t really turn out for my Gluten free,dairy free, soy free, nut free brothers! AH! They are really annoying when the tell me how my food is so ugly! But they have severe allergies, like if my bro touches milk he could die, and they don’t really have a choice. Besides,add frosting and it’s all good!!!
