Well, shut my mouth! According to reader Alyssa, even if you follow the directions exactly you can still end up with this result – a deflated, lop-sided Origami Star of Sadness. I guess some more practice might be in order, after all.

Oh oh oh these do take some practice! You need to remember not to flatten the paper too much before you pinch. Like, you’re not creasing the folded edge of the paper strips, you’re just wrapping it around the “knot”. And! don’t make the strips too too long, nor too too short. I think I made like 50 stars before I could make them well consistently.

the easiest way i found to get perfectly shaped origami stars is to use either thin plastic ribbons or any type of paper with a very shiny surface. that way the stars don’t get crushed when you pinch the corners. it kinda helps if you don’t pull the stars too taut when you are wrapping the stars. but practice really does make perfect. good luck next time!!
I used to make these a lot. They turn out a lot better if they’re wrapped really loose.
These actually just take a bit of practice. I once folded 1200 of them for centerpieces for my future mom-in-law’s wedding. I still grab a stack of the papers and fold some now and again just as mindless stress relief. Don’t give up on them! :)
I’m actually QUITE good at making these. They do take practice, and the right amount of thickness/length of paper folding. I disagree about wrapping loosely. I wrap them tight and I’ll maybe get one out of 10 that look bad.
