Coke Salad – Nailed It

cherry coke saladI’m not much of a cook, but one thing I’ve learned through the years is that any collection of three or more foods you find lying around your kitchen can be mixed together, just as long as you call it a “salad.” This culinary theory is proven by the existence of Coke Salad, like this one from Deep South Dish, in which you’re encouraged to combine a number of unlikely ingredients such as canned fruit, gelatin, Coke, and pecans.

Reader Heather, of Craft Cravings, found a similar recipe in a family cookbook and decided it sounded so strange (I think that’s code for “disgusting”) that she had to try it. She knew she was working with some oddball ingredients and puzzling directions, but she really started to suspect things weren’t going to work out when it looked like this:

coke saladInstead of using a popular cola beverage to make a sweet dessert, she accidentally made it into… a different beverage. A much chunkier, frothier beverage. Heather described it best herself when she declared, “I think this coke salad has rabies.”

    I’ve made CocaCola Salad for years, since I was a teen and I love it! You just have to know the right way to do it, or have a good recipe :) Its a family favorite!!
