Snowflake Sugar Cookies – Nailed It

Snowflake Sugar cookies

When I was growing up, my mom and I always set aside time to bake a batch or two of cookies. Mmm, I can almost smell them now . . .

Oh no wait, we took time to eat cookies. Screw baking – that takes effort, so we saved it for special occasions when society expects you to make things from scratch, like Christmas and elementary school bake sales.

These days, I just cut to the chase and eat the raw dough directly from the tube. But there’s still part of me that believes cookies taste better hot from the oven, especially when they’re shaped like wreaths and snowmen.

That’s probably why so many people find recipes like this one for snowflake sugar cookies by Pineapple and Coconut so appealing. The fancy icing probably doesn’t hurt, either.

CraftFail reader Sarah decided to bake up a batch, and by the time they were ready to pop in the oven her hopes were high and her taste buds were ready.

So far, so good! Then it was just a matter of waiting patiently while the sweet aroma of sugary goodness filled the air. A few minutes later, and her adorable, holiday-themed treats were baked! She pulled them from the oven, and . . .

Ohhhhh. See? This is why I just eat them from the tube. But all’s not lost – just pretend you were making cookie versions of Christmas toys . . .

Those aren’t regular sugar cookies in the original pin. My best friend does these decorated cookies for parties, holidays, etc. She has taken forever to start getting them to look cute.

Yep, can’t use a regular cookie dough to make those. Gotta look up a really stiff, homemade dough recipe, let it chill and make sure it’s nice and stable. Only way to get a properly cut cookie shape. I bet it taste good though!

Whatever dough she used would have failed regardless. Sugar cookies dough wouldn’t change shape at all. She must’ve been at high altitude? Gotta have EXTRA thick dough to bake anything at high altitude.

I’m thinking if margarine was used instead of butter that could make a difference too. My cookies used to spread like crazy until I switched.

I’m a proffessional baker. I’ve made literally thousands of cookies that look just like the inspration ones. But this ONE time I was in a hurry and bought a tube of sugar cookie dough from the store – EXACT SAME RESULT. I don’t know what’s wrong with the stuff, but I learned my lesson. Now I make my sugar cookie dough a couple days before I need it and keep it double-wrapped in the fridge.
