Domo Cake – D’oh!

domo cake inspirationThis Domo fellow seems to be pretty popular on the Internet, inspiring memes and videos and even fancy Domo cakes, like the one pictured here by Dough See Dough.

I am not what one would call “hip” or “cool” or “remotely in touch with anything hip or cool,” so I had to look up what the heck a Domo is, and frankly, looking it up didn’t really clarify things very much. It appears to have started as the Japanese mascot of something, and for no real reason whatsoever it became super famous. Sort of like the pet rock. Or jelly shoes. Or the Kardashians.

CraftFail repeat offender, Allison, didn’t have any idea what a Domo was either, which made me feel quite a bit better because she’s rather famous in her own right. People can’t stop talking about her Minecraft cake – by which I mean people can’t stop publicly criticizing her Minecraft cake – or her meatloaf train, which is even more horrendously awful than you could imagine just from the words “meatloaf train,” which sounds bad enough already. I say that with love because (luckily for us) Allison has a great sense of humor paired with a great ability to fabulously fail at food.

So, how could Allison make a cake based on a character she knew nothing about? She says, “…when I looked up a picture, it looked like a turd with teeth, so I just copied that premise.” How could she go wrong?

domo cakeWell, I’d say if she was going for “a turd with teeth,” this is an absolute success!

I know this is an old post, but just in case…Domo Kun is a mascot for Japanese broadcasting company NHK. When he first appeared, he was in cute/funny little sketches between programmes. He grew in poplularity and has tons of merch, which eventually made it’s way to other countries.

I wouldn’t call this a fail as many Domo Kun products are only the rectangle head. It may not look like the original photo, but defo looks like the character it is supposed to!
