Oh Say Can You See… This Pile of Patriotic Cake?

Betty Crocker flag cake

Some people like to bake from scratch, but box cake is about as close as I ever get to homemade. It’s way easier, and since I don’t have to stand in front of my pantry for twenty minutes trying to figure out the difference between “baking soda” and “baking powder” (How different could they BE, really?), I have a lot more time and energy left over for eating the cake.

The problem comes in when I re-complicate the simplicity. Since I don’t have to do stuff like grind my own wheat flour for the cake itself, sometimes I foolishly decide to put that effort into trying to make the cake look awesome, instead of just licking the beaters and calling it a day.

For example, Betty Crocker shows us how we can make a red, white and blue flag cake. It’s beautiful, but I noticed they didn’t mention how long it takes to go from simple, perfectly delicious plain white cake to frosted edible flag.

Reader Shanda went the extra mile and, instead of chowing down on a boring old (easy) cake, tried to make this fancy patriotic creation with her sister. ¬†Do you suppose they’d say it was worth the time and effort?

I guess that’s why Shanda and her sis say if they had a cooking show they’d call it Questionable Kitchen!
