Failure to Spin

April30

I’m a knitter and as such, I am fascinated by all things fiber-related.
Including spinning. I’d seen some demo videos on YouTube on how to make your own drop spindle, which intrigued me so I made one out of a pencil I swiped my son’s stash from the school Easter party, two pieces of box cardboard with a scratched up CD in between (the two cardboard bits are taped together for stability) and a metal cup-hook I found out in the garage.

I didn’t have any roving or any way to GET roving righ this minute because I’m on a bit of a budget right now. Traffic tickets will do that to you.

Anway..somebody on Ravelry said you could use polyfiberfill, which I happen to have loads of. They just didn’t say HOW you’re supposed to prepare it for spinning and since I figured I’d do what I always do (which is jump in feet first and figure out the finer points later), I’d just go for it.

Well..I wouldn’t quite call it yarn. It’s not even in the same universe as yarn.

Lobsters and Granny Squares and Pygmy Puffs..oh my!

Ok, so there are several fails here.
First off is Louie Lobster, which I made because I couldn’t think of anything ELSE to do with that hideous hot pink acrylic yarn I bought because it was cheap. I didn’t notice until afterwards that his tail was put together wrong (it was knit in 5 pieces and then sewn together). I also didn’t notice until it was too late that one claw looks rather wonky and was put on backwards. D: Wah.

Then Monday..I decided I just HAD to learn to crochet. Except there’s nobody to teach me except my good buddy Youtube. Compounding this little problem is the fact that I’m left handed which always makes things that much more complicated.

And last but not least is that shiny purple fun fur I couldn’t resist because it had been marked down from $4.99 to 71 cents. I had oogled it before but always passed it up because of the price. At 71 cents though, I couldn’t resist.

What came out of it though was Arnold the Blind Pygmy Puff (he has eyes you just can’t see them under all that fur). The pattern called to knit with 2 strands of fun fur and one strand of regular yarn on a sz 11 (I think it was) needle. With a ton of KFBs thrown in for good measure. Uh..how about no? I used a sz 15 (the largest needle I own) and it was difficult as heck with the double strand of fun fur and then a single strand of regular yarn. After a few minutes I said, “Oh bugger it!” and did my best to finish it off. I had intended it to be a toy for my son and instead it’s a cat toy. At least somebody’s getting some enjoyment out of it.

Because everybody needs a fugly hat

August31

By notagirlymom

I was trying to make just your basic hat..and it turned into one of the fugliest hats I’ve ever seen. It kinda looks like a giant knit boob complete with sticky up nipple.
My son graciously models the fugly hat

Mickey the Crack Mouse

By Notagirlymom

I had some leftover soft cotton/acrylic blend yarn from a washcloth I made so I decided I was going to make a stuffed thing. Only I figured, “Pattern? Eh! Patterns are for sissies! I DUN NEED NO STEENKEEN PATTERN!”.

I ended up with Mickey the Crack Mouse. *LOL*

His ears aren’t quite right, not really rounded at all, just little rectangles sewn onto his head. The thread I used to make his nose I thought was more pink than orange..until I sewed it on and got a good look at it. I also realize that mice do not typically have greenish eyes..but I liked the color so I went with it, even if his eyes do look a little funky. The tail I made by knotting three strands of pink thread together the way I used to do to make these funky sort of spirally friendship bracelets way back when. Yeah..those are skills I never thought would come in handy again.

He also has no legs/feet. He’s a ground mouse.

I know he’s kinda ugly..so ugly he’s kinda cute in a weird, cracktastic way. :-D
