Bleach Stencil Fail

Several years ago, when I first learned to stencil (and my stencil tutorial was tops at Craftster.org), I tried to make a bleach pen stencil.

The subject: Robert Rodriguez (cult filmmaker and author of one of my top three books of all time Rebel Without a Crew – read it if you like filmmaking)

The material: cheapo Wal-m@rt fabric. Probably poly-cotton.

The result: Bleachy with a chance of bleeding

The reason I thought of this is because over at Chezlin, someone tried to do a bleach stencil, and it was a bomb. (The picture was a bomb, and the technique also bombed).

Bonus points if you know what the image is from!

This is what happens when one decides they know what the baking instructions are for polymer clay… Without actually reading. I put them in the toaster oven and I thought it was supposed to be baked at 375 for 10 minutes – ever smell overcooked plastic?

Each piece puffed up like a burnt marshmallow – they really weren’t this lumpy when they entered the oven. Do they look happily vintage to you?

Our local market had a manager’s special on 16 oz...

The Easy Way Key Fob = Fail

Last week on my blog, I shared an easy beaded key fob idea. Well, I have a word of warning.

They are not that sturdy.

But before I go on, you must meet the most uncoordinated woman I know. Yep, it’s me!

This week I tripped and fell as I was getting into my car. (I know! How do you do that?!?)

To brace my fall, I put my hand out.

With my keys.

In my hand.

Into the steering wheel.

There was a loud crack and a shower of pretty beads sprayed around the car.

So – that “easy” way to finish the string of beads with just a crimp bead?

It may be easy, but not durable.

Of course, I figured this out after I had made a bunch of fun key fobs! Darn!

Sorry, Cake

My good friend wanted to make me a birthday cake, however it being her first cake attempt, it fell apart, and she tried to salvage what she could, resulting in the above “Sorry” cake. Now, this masterpiece only worthy of the most seasoned pastry chef has since resulted in a long line of “literal” cakes, that being her second attempt, the “Cake” cake, and also some “Potluck” cupcakes…

I must say the “Sorry” cake has been my favourite b-day cake of all time due to the sheer humour and repeated insults I am able to throw her way. Pure awesome.

Leather Baby Shoe Fail

I know, it’s not really fair to leave a project half done and call it a fail. This itty bitty baby leather shoe didn’t work out, so we parted ways. Except “parting ways” meant I left it in the bottom of my sewing box and forgot about it for 2 years. I recently unearthed it to share it with you!

The shoe is based on the free shoe pattern from Ohelene. Except I made some modifications. Like cutting a freehand weird shape to put on the top front of the shoe, and folding over the top to cover the elastic, instead of using a leather strip casing, like in the tutorial.

My old sewing machine barely sews, too, so there’s that.

I still want to try making these. Maybe this time I’ll follow the directions.

Failed Attempt at a Duct Tape Rose

My boyfriend finally popped the question a few weeks ago, and we’re planning a wedding for September 18th. We’re perpetually broke (who isn’t these days) so, in order to save money, this is going to be very much a DIY affair. One of the first projects I decided to tackle was the bridal bouquets.

At first, I thought I would use sil flowers because I was certain that they would be more cost-effective than fresh flowers in the fall in a northern climate. However, I soon found out that fake flowers that don’t look cheap aren’t cheap. So I started looking for other alternatives.

As I was digging through my massive treasure trove of craft supplies, I came across a box containing my collection of colored duct tape. I recalled seeing a tutorial somewhere for making duct tape roses, so I Googled it, found what looked like a decent set of instructions and got to work. The result? Not exactly what I had envisioned.

It looked less like a beautiful, realistic rose and more like a coiled-up gum wrapper chain.

I soon realized that the tutorial I was using was lacking several important details and photos of some crucial steps. I started over, and this time my rose came out much better. I’m very happy with how the finished product came out, and I wrote a duct tape wedding bouquet tutorial in the meantime!

I’m having trouble deciding if some of these WIPs (Works in Progress) are still in the category of “In Progress” or simply failed attempts of yarn-ee creativity. What better outlet than the forum of CraftFail to let the internets decide! (Yes plural, I have a problem with LOLSpeak making me giggle when applied to life away from the computer!)

First up is a little something I thought would be great way to recycle, crochet over an object! [See original Flickr photo/post here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rengawk/2454617989/] Neat right?! I added some bird-like parts to make it into a critter, and then came this, which I was proudly displaying via Flickr the next day! [http://www.flickr.com/photos/rengawk/2471641662/]

So what happened next you ask?

*crickets chirp*

Maybe it got thrown around a few times?

*a door creaks in the background*

Yeah, I will admit, it has sat here for two years in the same state – how embarrassing! I’ve had some folks pick it up out of my little PLEASE FINISH ME crochet area (which I would like to keep sharing with your support), but haven’t found the right embellishments or features to add.

Is it a reject from a Happy Potter adventure?

Does it need a felt beak and eyes?

Or just big felt eyes to make a o0 face?

Is it perfect just how it is, and if so, what do I do with this silly thing and who wants it?!

I’d sneak it on Etsy (as I am trying so hard to get my little shop of crochet creations moving along again) but what if I’m the only one who thinks it is funny? Gah what if it ends up on Regretsy [http://www.regretsy.com/]?! I’d have to retreat back to my virtual cafe where I scramble for ingredients on Facebook…. and all these cupcakes would be sad and lonely and never venture out of here!

Speaking of cupcakes, at least they have been undeniably cute [http://www.flickr.com/photos/rengawk/4704899557/] (but I’m biased after all) ;)

i was at a thrift store when i spotted a cute little ceramic tile with that bird design on it. it was adorable! the style, the colours. totally me.

one problem: the tile was glued down to a very ugly cheeseboard.

i started with a beautiful tile i found at the thrift store, which broke into many bitty pieces when i brought it home. saddened, i decided to try and save it by making a mosaic out of the pieces, and that only made matters worse…

like i said, some ideas are just doomed from the start.

lesson learned? just use the cheese platter next time, as is, or put it back.

well. maybe… unless! does anyone know how to make a mosaic out of a broken mosaic? or is that another one of those ideas that is better left alone? my creative cortex has been known to misfire…
