A good disguise!

July2

by luluvision

I have a big head. So I don’t like to wear hats, besides which I get severe hat head. But then I saw this post to make a custom hat and thought “Well, maybe I just haven’t found the right sized hat, what better than one to custom fit my head!”

I was a little nervous about making the pattern. I have never done one before but the instructions seemed really simple. I made all the measurements, cut out my pattern and got my fabric. I was really unsure about the whole thing. Although I’ve been sewing for a few years, I still consider myself a novice. I’ve never sewn clothes before and have a tendency to sew crooked. That’s why I usually stick with little totes and pouches. This was a new adventure for me! I could picture myself zipping through this project and making a hat for every outfit! And then I can boast to my 2 year old daughter, See! I am wearing a hat too! (I always make her wear her hat out in the sun and she used to ask Where’s mommy’s hat?)

I was really chicken to use my precious fabric so opted to test it out on an old sheet. I did not make it reversable as I just wanted to make sure it worked out. Are you ready for the result??

Drum roll please…

That’s me smirking under there! I could just cut some holes for the eyes and it would be a good disguise…if I don’t mind people laughing at me. I know what I did wrong and at the time didn’t realize the consequence of it. When I measured my head, it was an odd number and since I had to divide it by an even number and didn’t want to deal with fractions, I rounded the measurement up to an even number. Well, afterwards I was like DUH! OF COURSE IT’S GOING TO BE TOO BIG!! LOL. I will try again tho!

When I saw your photo, I immediately thought of this “Cosby Kid” cartoon character: http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/dumb_donald.jpg

Thanks for the fun “flash back.”

LOL. You could cut out eyes and go as “Dumb Donald” from Fat Albert cartoons sister for Halloween!

You could still salvage it into a pouch or a unique reuseable gift bag by making a seam on the bottom and running a ribbon through the seam to pull it shut.

LOL, I’m laughing so hard, my little ones ran in here to see what was wrong. And they giggled to at the “too big hat, mommy!”.

Seriously, though, I can’t say anything because “tweaking the numbers to avoid fractions” is so something I would do!

    I love your expression!
At least you learned from it… going to check out your blog & see if you made future hats. And I love the salvage idea to make it into a gift bag or pouch, very crafty!

I love it! You could totally turn it into a gift bag, or better yet, add some pockets and a handle and turn it into a gardnening tote for seeds or tools. Happy Gardning
