The Skin Condition Hat

This is my most Epic Craft Fail. Let me introduce you to the Skin Disease hat.

   Brock 1662

From circa 2006. I had made a few crochet hats prior to this and thought I had it figured out. Just start off small, toss in a few evenly spaced increases every other row until the crown is the right size, then work even until you have a hat. Right?

Wrong. Beginner me hadn’t yet learned about matching project to yarn, gauge, sizing, etc. Plus look at those hideous purple lesions! See, I had been making some hats with a thick/thin yarn and a size M or larger hook. It made a great texture and made the hats go quickly. Looking at this yarn in the super clearance bin (only $0.50 a skein! How could I leave it there?!), I assumed it would work up in the same way. Wrong again.

What you can’t see is that the white bits are extremely loose due to the large crochet hook I used.  And the whole deal is infused with a glittery tinsel that makes it look like bright, shiny, happy skin lesions. To add insult to injury, my gauge and increases were so wrong, it would have easily fit a giant.

It was so terrible, I didn’t even try to save the yarn. The whole thing plus the unused yarn went into the trash can.

That is too funny but you took a photo to memorialize it, I wouldn’t have even admitted that I had made it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments! I actually wish I had a better photo of it. This portrays it’s ugliness pretty well but it’s missing its sparkle. We crafters can be such magpies at times.

ugh, there is something so hokey about crochet. Reminds me of that show Mamma’s Family. Remember that?

Too bad you don’t have a photo of someone wearing it!

Oh goodness. Every once in a while, I get the first inklings of an urge to learn how to knit or crochet. Then I see a project like this and realize: “Wow. And that’s probably better than I could ever do…”

Too funny! Wish there were more photos!

Sew some matching fabric on the back and add some of that flat quit batting and you got yourself a handy dandy potholder. :-D
