Failed cornflour ornaments

What is this? – The ingredients for a craft project?- No its actually, my craft project come undone- all on its own!!

I wanted to make Christmas tree ornaments which I can shape any way I like. My oven’s not working, so I was looking for a recipe that didn’t involve baking- and I found a recipe made from basically cornflour and baking soda.

It was all going fine. I made the dough, shaped the ornaments, even pierced holes to put a thread through. And then I left them to dry, before I could paint them.

Meanwhile I enthusiastically put up this new idea on a blog I started recently. I was so proud of myself.

I couple of days later, I’m go back to the ornaments to paint them and guess what I found- A dry mixture of cornflour and baking powder!! So that’s what this mess is.

I guess I didn’t do my measurements right, and I managed to use baking powder instead of baking soda. Next time, I’ll be more careful. I’m still on the lookout for a good recipe, If I find something better, I’ll put it up on my blog- but this time I’ll wait for a couple of days first!!!

Hope you enjoyed my story. I’m Sharon and I love doing crafts for fun. Do visit my brand new blog http://afewnicethings.wordpress.com/. I also contribute under the name Sharon David to this craft blog http://www.artistshelpingchildren.org/kidscraftsactivitiesblog/

Oh, bummer. To put in that much work and then have it crumble…

Try a salt dough recipe (flour and salt). They tell you to bake it but it’s like Playdough and will dry out on it’s own in a couple of days. I still have ornaments the kids made about 3 years ago and they’re doing fine.

I know there is a recipe with Elmer’s glue and is better to model and the final result is very soft and paintable. Look for it!

I’ve made ornaments using a cinnamon – applesauce recipe similar to the first one here: http://www.handmadecountry.com/ezine/cinnamon.html

They smell AMAZING, and the dough is completely kid-safe (i.e. edible).

We made cold porcelain clay ornaments this year, and painted them – and they are still nice and hard, and holding together – so I’d say go for cold porcelain next time – it dries pretty fast too, and doesn’t need an oven. I posted the recipe on my blog – but there are lots of good ones out there.
