Macrame disaster

May20

by Chica and Jo

Sometimes the projects we try fail miserably, no matter how much we want to make them work.  I know you’ve all experienced that before and feel our pain… that why CraftFails is around, right?  I had just such a failure this weekend, and because it’s only fair to share the bad as well as the good, I want to show you what happened.

macrame rope matI have been wanting to do something with macrame lately, and looking for a good material and project. I thought I had the perfect material when I found a bundle of poly rope in the corner of the garage. It was colorful and I thought it was soft and flexible enough to macrame with just fine.

I had the brilliant idea of making a doormat out of it. It’s outdoor rope, after all, so it would be sturdy and strong and would make such a neat addition to our front porch.

Except it totally didn’t work.

I almost don’t even want to show you, but I have to!

macrame rope mat

In retrospect, I see what went wrong. The rope was too firm to tie into tight knots. It was too thick to make a finished mat that was thin enough to be usable. And most of all, I just did it wrong! I didn’t even realize until I looked at the picture just now.

Despite the dozens of macrame projects I did as a kid, back when macrame was “cool”, I thought I remembered what to do for this project. But I see now that I completely forgot to work with four cords at a time instead of two, so my piece had no stability or structure when it was done.

If you don’t know what I mean by that, don’t worry — I am going to try to macrame again and I promise this time I’ll hopefully get better results, because I’ll work with better materials!

Pretty colors – I can see why you wanted this to work. This sounds like the classic example of learning from a mistake – now you’ll know all the things NOT to do next time – and you’ll be bound to succeed! I wish I learned so well from my mistakes, but alas, I repeat the same ones over and over in my life….

I still think it looks kind of cool, but I can tell it’s not functional! :) Thanks for sharing!

    Chica-

I totally love that you posted something on here! In some small way it makes me feel normal… Yeah so your craft room make over, um… I totally need to take a day, or two off from work to clean it. I can’t find anything anymore and it is just horrible! I look at it, grab what I need in fear that I am going to get sucked in and no one will be able to find me. Ok, so total exaggeration, but you get what I mean!

Can’t wait to see the next attempt, good luck!
